They’re everywhere nowadays: iPad believers. It has become not only a private but more and more a true business cult. Not just because of their religious beliefs in the Power of the iPad, but they also are true missioners with their cute little tablets. Every meeting they show their iPad with great proud and shining eyes. Even project plans and strategies are stored in their iPad. Not to mention all their private pictures and video’s, all kind of newspapers en magazines, numbers of application for their own children and wifes. The iPad is more than a laptop it is crucial piece of equipment for the whole household. Besides that the iPad missioners present their cute little tablets like serious work.
With their black, thin tool, and lots of applications, needing the functionality of these applications or not, they create a language of their own: “Apple talk”. The more “apps”, downloaded with “iTunes” the more educated and intelligent the iPad missioner tries to look. And some people are seriously intimidated by it. If you’re capable of using this great number of apps pretending you need them all, it must be good.
It is like the famous Ministry of Silly Walks where everybody is acting incredibly silly, yet no one sees it’s silly. Everybody must use this incredible usefull piece of technology and it is taken seriously! The real benefits of the iPad can be found here.
When you say you don’t understand the use of this tool, you can’t even make a phonecall with it, they cannot hide their disgust. They look up, trying to find more proof of a lack of intelligence. If someone else is not able to understand the true benefits of using this blackbord like, flat thing, there must be something wrong with the sceptic. Of course it has nothing to do with their cute little tablet.
I said the iPad missioners are religious. This also means there is an in crowd. And, of course an out crowd. As soon as you’ve mastered the secret coding and have shown proof of your ability to use this cute little tablet, you’re in. They seriously think it is very, very professional to use this excuse for a laptop and present it as aserious tool. Right.
The easiest way to avoid painful confrontations with iPad missioners is to have a look at their cute little tool like you’re really interested in how they take benefit of this tool. Nod, put a friendly little smile on your face and nod again. And ignore the cute little thing after that. No one will notice.

Ik ben blij dat ik inspiratie ben voor je blog 😉
Als Microsoft-adept (mijn PC is en blijft MS maar kan ik met een tool wel op afstand bedienen met mijn iPad …) ben ik van mening dat Apple de enige is die een werkbare tablet heeft geleverd (met name ook vanwege de Appstore, want zie in dat verband de berichtgeving over de Google appstore). Het gaat mij dus niet zozeer om de iPad als iPad (ik geef toe, er zijn Apple discipelen waar weinig nuance aanwezig).
De professionele toepassing van een tablet is in mijn ogen het volgen van nieuws en sociale media. Vooral dat laatste is zeer sterk in beweging binnen de OOV-keten (Openbare Orde en Veiligheid). Na de brand in Moerdijk was twitter korte tijd overbelast dus het valt gewoon niet te negeren. Een toepassing als Flipboard is in mijn ogen een zeer bruikbare tool om die brij aan info die via twitter langs komt enigszins leesbaar te volgen. Daarnaast wil ik ontdekken of het gebruik van een app waarmee aantekenen gemaakt kunnen worden in combinatie met een pdf of een word doc helpt om minder papier bij me te hebben.
Kortom, vooral een open houding bij het leren omgaan met iets nieuws i.p.v. het afschieten omdat je er geen deel van wilt of kan uitmaken.
p.s. Overigens opvallend dat je in de discussie over mindmapping juist de andere kant benadrukt.
p.p.s. In meer algemene zin begin ik steeds meer het idee te krijgen dat zodra een bepaalde ontwikkeling of produkt zowel op het religieuze af enthousiaste volgers EN op het radicale af fanatieke anti-volgers kent, je deze ontwikkeling of dit produkt wel serieus moet nemen!
